What’s Your Challenge: Stopping or Starting?

beginnings are endings cropChange is all about something being different from what it was up until now.  You are dealing with a new situation. You’re starting a new behavior or you’re stopping an old one. It seems like it’s one or the other. That’s simple. But we all know it isn’t. If you don’t want to recall your own personal challenges with change, just ask someone who has decided to stop smoking or start exercising. Stopping or starting should be easy. At least one of them should be. So why does the thought of change create the angst, the fear, the procrastination, the drama, and then often the resignation to or abandonment of that something different?

I think it’s all about perspective and I think LaoTzu agrees. Beginnings and endings are intricately linked, like Yin and Yang. Stopping and starting aren’t “either or”, but “both and”. That’s why I believe we have similar stress doing either. If you stop smoking, you’ll probably have to start hanging out with new people on your coffee break. If you start exercising, you might have to stop watching so much TV. And then what will happen? You guessed it. You are confronted with the mystery of the unknown.

So getting back to perspective, how about instead of thinking of mystery as scary, thinking of it as an adventure, an exploration, a quest for hidden treasure? It’s a treasure you may find inside you or somewhere out in a world you never knew existed. There’s a surprise waiting for you when you have the courage to embrace change. Change is really a present ready to be opened.

TAKE a CHANCE on CHANGE

Even when you say you don’t want CHANGE, your inner voice may tell you that it’s time for a change and it’s important to trust that voice because only you know what is best for you.

Personal growth happens when you let yourself expand beyond where your life has been so far. It’s different. That’s CHANGE. When figuring out what your next change will be, think about creative ways you can use your skills and reach your dreams. Imagining your perfect future and listing ways to make it happen can help you choose a change that’s right for you. Meditation, journal writing, taking a class, and other CREATIVE activities can inspire you to take the next step in life that will bring you new satisfaction.

When you COURAGEOUSLY listen to yourself, figuring out your next step becomes easy. Beneath fear and hesitation lies your inner voice that knows which step to take next.

Courage is Faith in Change

Bf__bl_ideaI can’t believe it’s been a month since I returned from my writer’s retreat, but oh what changes that month brought. I know now my change started even before I went because I went with NO expectations.

I didn’t know the people who would be there or what we’d do once we were together. I did know I wanted to do my writing differently. I wanted change even though I didn’t know where it would take me. The result was I discovered things in my writing and in me I wasn’t aware of, but those things were very evident to others who read my work. My change was revealing me to me. I didn’t expect I was the goal in this journey, but I’m happy I had faith that my courage would lead me where I needed to go.
